Our new mobile web is coming soon, thanks to PWA

Committed to our goal of delivering an amazing user experience, we’ve recently started developing a new mobile web using Google’s PWA framework.

PWA stands for progressive web app, a mobile website that contains most of the potential functions and benefits that a typical mobile app has:

  • Engaging: Feel like a natural app on the device, with an immersive user experience
  • Fast: Respond quickly to user interactions
  • Reliable: Load instantly, even in uncertain network conditions
  • Add to homescreen: Progressive Web Apps are installable and live on the user’s home screen, without the need for an app store

As you can see, our new mobile web will have a resemblance with Simple Radio, and be much faster. Users will still be able to listen to stations, add them to favorites, search and browse among station names, genres, cities and countries.

We’ve done some preliminary testing and so far the PWA is outperforming our current mobile web in a bunch of user-related metrics, such as average session time and sessions per user. People that use the PWA return more often than those from the mobile web.

We are planning to do a full rollout of our new mobile web experience with PWA later in 2019 🙂

Simple Radio now available on the Amazon Store

Hi there again!

As we mentioned previously, we think voice activated platforms will be a big part of the future of radio

Our aspiration is that Simple Radio will be there reacting to your voice commands and our first foray into this space will be Amazon Echo. To that end, we decided to initially make our app available on the Amazon Store. We’re happy to say that Simple Radio is already getting great reviews – as usual, reviews that emphasize that our app is simple and that it is highly valued by users.

At Streema we want to take the simple listening experience that radio offers to every device on every platform, whether voice activated, in the car, or wherever else radio will consumed. Making Simple Radio available on the Amazon Store is another step in that direction.

A Voice-Activated Simple Radio

As we mentioned in the last post of 2016, this year will give us more insight into the changes coming in how people access great audio content.

According to the recently published Infinite Dial report by Edison Research, 7% of Americans 12+ own smart speakers and that number will only go up over time. We’ve even seen it with our own users, some of which buy a Google Home device or an Amazon Echo and want to activate Simple Radio with the sound of their voice.

At Streema we strive to go where people want to go and we firmly believe voice-activated platforms are the future of audio listening – they provide a simple way to seamlessly integrate into someone’s life, without friction, and we want your favorite radio station to make it there.

Simple Radio Now Available in 13 Languages

At Streema we’ve always had users from all over the world using our applications. A few years ago we added multiple languages to our website, and we felt that it was time to do the same for Simple Radio. As a mobile app with a lot of international usage, we felt Simple Radio needed to be more international, so we worked with people from several different countries to add great content and now we’ve added many more languages.

We initially had English, Spanish, Portuguese, and French, and now we’ve launched the following new languages on our Simple Radio app:

  • Italian
  • Hindi
  • Japanese
  • Malay
  • Korean
  • Chinese
  • Indonesian
  • Russian
  • German

We’re considering adding more languages so, as a Simple Radio user, which ones do you think we should add next?

Our Simple Radio App Now Has a 4.5 Average Rating on Google Play

At Streema we’ve always been proud of the products we build, having a culture centered around listening to our users and building for them. This is why the average rating, while an imperfect indicator of quality, is a key metric for us.

Last year we achieved a 4.6 average rating on the App Store but on Google Play for a long time we seemed to be stuck on a 4.4 rating, so we set out to change that. Over the past 12 months we’ve been working hard to improve our product: we added more content, enhanced our user experience, and, most importantly, we continued to listen to your feedback.*

As of this month, we can finally say that, joining our traditional 4.6 rating on the App Store, we now have new 4.5 rating on Google Play – so thank you for all of your feedback!

On a related note, we routinely look at a report that the Google Play platform offers to developers, that highlights the most common words that users mention through reviews. We recently looked at it and these were the Top 5:

Easy to use. Best radio app. Local stations. Great selection. Clear sound.

This is all music to our ears – pun intended!

10M Monthly Active Users on our Platform

Today we’re happy to share with you that Streema recently reached 10 Million Monthly Active Users! We never thought that ten million people would use our service in a single month, but here we are. 😄

It’s difficult to think how big a number 10 million is when referring to people, but given the time we live in and thanks to many products and services we rely on, it’s also great to share that it’s possible to make it happen with a small team like ours.

Streema’s user base has changed in many ways through the years. For a long time our product has been used by desktop users at Streema.com – however, today, of those 10 million, around 7 million are mobile between mobile web and our Simple Radio App in Android and iOS.

Simple Radio has been the main reason for that growth in the last few years. Our app has received positive reviews with an average of 4.4 stars in the Play Store and 4.5 in the App Store, making it one of the best rated music apps out there. To all our lovely users, THANK YOU!

Simple Radio for Android Auto is here!

We’ve been quietly working away on many things during the first few months of the year and wanted to share with you one of our projects: Simple Radio for Android Auto. The connected car is part of a future that is quickly coming to the present, and at Streema we want to be a part of it.

We’re proud to announce that we were selected as launch partners at Google’s Android Auto event last week in São Paulo, Brazil, where Google announced that Android Auto was coming to the South American country in April. Local media picked it up and we can say we’re very excited to contribute to create a more connected (car) world.

1 year and 1M MAU on Android later

Simple Radio by Streema

Before the year came to an end, we wanted to take a little time with you to celebrate some of our milestones in this amazing 2015. 🙂

In particular, it has been an important year for us in mobile. We launched Simple Radio for Android in January and Simple Radio for Apple Watch in April. We also added Chromecast Support, to the delight of many of our users.

We wanted to make a special mention about our Android app: in less than 12 months we reached 1 million Monthly Active Users on that platform and its success led us to be featured on Google Play.

And finally, we have also been listening to you and working very hard to improve our product, a result of which is that Simple Radio now has a 4.4 rating out of 5 on Android and 4.5 over 5 on iOS.

We have big plans for 2016, so stay tuned.

Simple Radio Now Has 1M Monthly Active Users on Mobile

As you may have noticed, we’ve been very quiet at Streema – no big news announcements nor blog posts over the past few months. The truth is that it’s been a busy time here. We’ve been quietly working on a few different things, the most important being listening to your feedback and improving our Simple Radio application.

Well, we can say that the work is paying off: even though we launched Simple Radio less than a year ago – 11 months ago on October 27, 2014 to be exact – we’re proud to say that we recently hit the 1M MAU milestone. Even more importantly, those are happy users that have sent us thousands of happy messages as well as given us a 4.5 average rating across mobile platforms, making us one of the highest rated radio apps out there.

We’re still hard at work, since the work is never finished, but wanted to take a moment to share the good news.
